Liberty Mutual Insurance is strengthening its surety operations and capacity in Germany, emphasizing its commitment to being a leading German and European surety provider. Later this month, Liberty Mutual Surety will open a second office in Hamburg, building on its established presence and strong team in Cologne. With surety operations in 10 European countries, and across North America, South America, and Asia Pacific, Liberty Mutual Surety is the largest global insurance provider of surety bonds and guarantees based on written premium.
As part of this growth, Liberty Mutual is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Martin Wendt as Head of Surety Germany, with additional underwriting responsibilities for Austria and Switzerland. Dr. Wendt will be based in the new Hamburg office and will soon be joined by other experienced surety underwriters.
Dr. Wendt brings over 13 years of extensive experience in the surety industry, combining deep expertise in risk underwriting, business development, and leadership. Prior to joining Liberty Mutual, he served as an authorized officer (Prokurist) at Tryg Trade in Hamburg where he was instrumental in establishing the company as a recognized surety player in Germany.
Beginning his career at Allianz Trade, Dr. Wendt held various roles including group-level credit approval, management of critical risks, and Head of Large Corporates Surety. He holds a PhD in Economics and Finance, with a specialization in the capital structures of family-owned firms within the German Mittelstand.
“As an inspiring and passionate leader, Dr. Wendt motivates teams with energy and vision, fostering a culture of trust, collaboration, and shared success,” said Roland Richter, Head of Surety EMEA. “We look forward to leveraging his expertise to strengthen our market position and deliver innovative surety solutions for our clients.”
